The Global Public Policy Network was originally conceived to provide a mechanism to help global stakeholders prepare for and provide input to the water and sanitation review at the 16th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development.

The GPPN always intended to continue its work beyond the initial water and sanitation review process at CSD-16, and serve as a platform to identify priorities for the water and sanitation agenda up to and beyond 2015. The structure of the GPPN brings together governments from the North and South, UN agencies, NGOs, business organisations and international experts on water and sanitation.
